Chinese police have cracked 825 criminal cases related to illegal football gambling. They have dismantled over 500 criminal gangs since launching a summer operation on June 4. This is according to the statement given last week from an official from the Ministry of Public Security.
Deputy director of the ministry’s bureau of public security administration, Zhang Xiaopeng revealed at a press conference that these cases involve gambling funds totaling to more than 30 billion yuan or $4.28 billion.
The ministry has prioritized efforts to combat the operation of illegal gambling venues during major soccer events. This includes UEFA Euro 2024, as well as the Copa America, according to Zhang. The deputy director added that authorities have instructed police across China to carry out special operations targeting football gambling.
