A Las Vegas sports bettor thought he was flush with cash. He backed outsider Joel Moscatel Nachshon to win the first round of the 2023 Australian PGA Championship through William Hill.
The bettor claims that the Caesars Entertainment-owned sportsbook shortchanged him by nearly 40,000 USD, according to The Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The gambler placed 200 USD on Moscatel to win at odds of +20,000. They haven’t made his name public. The ranking body placed the little-known Spanish golfer 1,162nd in the world during that period. However, for that day only, he played like the number one.
Moscatel went on a tear to shoot a course record-equaling round of 62 on the opening day of the championship. Matching Jef Morgan’s title-winning performance of the prior year, the 25-year-old nailed eight birdies in his bogey-free round.
Moscatel finished the tournament in seventh place with an 11-under-par score. Nonetheless, his Day 1 performance had made the gambler 40,000 USD richer; or so he thought.
The bettor was told that the +20,000 odds had been posted in error. He was informed that the correct odds were +400. As a result, he was left with only 800 USD in winnings.
It is unclear why William Hill would have offered such short odds on a player ranked 1,162nd in the world. It is even more unclear why anyone would have placed a bet on him. Nevertheless, the aggrieved sports bettor wants to find out.
The gambler has taken the case to the NGBC or the Nevada Gaming Control Board, which heard arguments from both parties at a hearing last week. The board will make its recommendation to the NGC or Nevada Gaming Commission. This will decide on the matter at a later date.
The sports bettor claimed the winning $40,200 ticket (winnings plus stake), which had been in his William Hill account for five days. However, the company swapped it for a lower amount without explanation.
