Puntland State of Somalia has officially banned the use of the 1xBet app for online betting and gambling. This follows an executive decree issued by President Said Abdullahi Deni.
The app is widely utilized within the state. It has been linked to social and economic concerns. This includes capital flight and family disruptions.
The decree directs telecommunications companies operating in Puntland: Golis, Somtel, and Amtel, not to make new accounts connected with 1xBet services and to close any existing accounts used for betting as well as gambling purposes.
Nonetheless, these companies have yet to show compliance with the directive.
This move follows a call for action in early November by Abdiqani Farah Dhaashane. He is a Puntland Member of Parliament who advocated for stricter measures to restraint unregulated online betting.
Dhaashane highlighted the negative consequences of 1xBet’s operations, particularly among younger users, and questioned the role of telecommunications companies in allowing these services.
Within Puntland’s political landscape, the executive decree has ignited debate. Others argue that the presidency has overstepped its authority while some lawmakers view the decision as a necessary step to address a growing issue.
Critics suggest that the Telecommunications Ministry should have been responsible for regulating online betting and gambling. Moreover, raising concerns about potential power imbalances within the state government.
