Spelinspektionen, the Swedish Gambling Authority, examined the gambling habits of Swedes. It has published its findings from a survey conducted in 2024.
The Public Opinion Survey is conducted yearly with the support of the research company Enkätfabriken.
In November 2024, a survey took place where there were just over 1,600 respondents. The findings showed that 71% of Swedes gambled for money in the past 12 months. Additionally, 33% of players gambled weekly.
Looking on an individual basis, lotteries and number games remained the most popular form of betting. This is with 84% of those surveyed saying they had participated in lotteries, as well as number games.
16% answered yes absolutely, 55% say yes to some extent and 29% said no, not at all when asking if gambling companies are taking responsibility for gambling problems.
As a means to disconnect from gambling, 66% showed awareness of the self-exclusion scheme Spelpaus.se.
The motivations behind why people participate in gambling is another key finding from the data. At 69%, the most common reason was for fun, entertainment, followed by to winning big at 40%.
In other news from Sweden, operator Svenska Spel reported its fourth-quarter and full-year results last week. This shows a 10.3% increase in operating profit in the fourth quarter of the past year.
