The CID, or Criminal Investigation Department, of Bangladesh Police has launched a nationwide operation. The operation targets online gambling and betting. This is in accordance with the newly issues Cyber Security Ordinance, 2025.
A CID press release stated that the CID is working professionally. Their goal is to identify and bring to justice those involved in online crimes.
It stated that, so far, the CID has identified over 1,000 MFS (Mobile Banking) agents. Authorities have linked these agents to online gambling instructions with evidence of their involvement.
Moreover, it stated that authorities are taking steps to take legal action against these agents. They have already sent the list of agents involved in the crime to Bangladesh Bank for license cancellation and fines.
The CID has urged everyone not to participate in online gambling and betting. It also called on people to raise awareness within their families, especially among the younger generation.
The Cyber Police Center of CID requests everyone to contact them with information about suspicious apps, websites, or mobile numbers at 01320010146, 01320010147, or 01320010148.
Right now, people are engaging in online gambling through mobile apps, websites, and social media, where they become addicted in hopes of earning easy money.
As a result, many are facing financial ruin and destitution. They are engaging in criminal activities, domestic violence, and even tragic incidents like suicide.
Online gambling, creating and promoting gambling apps or portals is a punishable offense, according to Section 20 of the Cyber Security Ordinance, 2025.
This offense is punishable by imprisonment for up to 2 years, a fine of up to one crore taka, or both.
Furthermore, Sections 21 and 22 have declared gambling-related transactions, fraud, and forgery as restricted.
