Consultancy GMattos shows that Brazil’s online betting market is increasingly intertwined with Pix, an instant payment system. The study found that betting websites accounted for 15.3% of all Pix payments from individuals to companies in the first half of 2025. Payments of winnings from companies to individuals made up 13.5% of total transactions in the opposite direction as reported by IGaming Today.

Introduced in 2020 by the Central Bank of Brazil, the figures illustrate how Pix has become the main payment channel for a sector that legalized sports betting only two years earlier. CEO of GMattos, Gastão Mattos said that Pix was not created for betting, but it fits perfectly. It is available around the clock, transfers funds instantly, and nearly everyone has access. That made it the core of online betting payments in Brazil.
Pix dominates transactions despite other options being available on betting platforms. GMattos notes that alternative payment methods rarely work, reinforcing Pix’s role as a low-cost and reliable infrastructure for the industry.
GMattos cross-referenced Ministry of Finance data with transaction volumes to quantify the use of Pix. Legally operated betting websites reported net revenue of R$17 billion in the first half of 2025. GMattos estimated R$242.8 billion in deposits and R$225.8 billion in payouts through Pix from this. These reflect the scale of the sector and its reliance on the system.
The figures have wider implications. Regulators and policymakers should address taxation, transaction monitoring, as well as responsible gambling practices. The link between Pix and online betting has now become a defining feature of the financial landscape of the country. The sector remains central in discussions on taxation, regulation, as well as the future of the digital payments network of Brazil with over 15% of business-to-person Pix flows tied to gambling.
