Faiz Ahmed Taiyeb has underlined that authorities will shut down sites engaging with betting advertisements.
Faiz Ahmed Taiyeb, Bangladesh Telecommunications & ICT Minister, has stated that all websites engaging with betting or related unsafe advertising materials could face removal. Authorities could take immediate action against these sites. This applies even if the content is shared through hyperlinks. The government has the authority to take action against these sites.
Local reports state that in spite of numerous previous warnings submitted by authorities in Bangladesh as to the illegality of gambling advertising, a lot new sites keep on running unregulated betting ads.
A discussion took place during a wider meeting at the BTRC (Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission) headquarters in Dhaka. Taiyeb explained that the Bangladeshi Government is now using previously introduced web crawling technologies. These tools identify links between mobile financial service accounts and gambling activity. Authorities compile lists of unregulated accounts for weekly evaluation. He stated that they have already identified and removed over 1,330 illegal links.
Nonetheless, Taiyeb has called for stronger enforcement measures. He urged broadband service providers and mobile operators to take action. The goal is to address the growing network of unregulated gambling advertisements.
Taiyeb addressed the issue during the meeting. He said that almost all media outlets are still actively running unsafe content and gambling advertisements. He added that they continue doing so because they earn money from it. Authorities have already issued multiple notices. There will be no further public notice, they will simply close them. Authorities must shut down these sites.
This latest news comes after the government declared a zero-tolerance online gambling policy last week. The announcement followed the implementation of new nationwide iGaming enforcement under the Cyber Security Ordinance 2025.
