Betting operators in Brazil strongly oppose the lack of online betting apps in Apple and Google’s app stores. Yet, regulations for the sector have come into effect in the country since January.

As a consequence, licensed companies can legally operate in the Brazilian market. Nonetheless, both the Play Store and Apple Store still keep on blocking access to these apps. Moreover, only Caixa Econômica Federal lottery apps are now available for download.
Executives from betting companies expressed their frustration with the stance adopted by the technology giants in private conversations. They also raised concerns in meetings with representatives of the Ministry of Treasury. The industry expected official apps to launch this year. They viewed these apps as essential for boosting credibility and providing greater security to users.
Veja contacted Google, which in April had reaffirmed its policy of restricting betting apps from the Play Store. Nevertheless, the company declined to comment on whether there are plans to update its rules. Apple did not respond to the attempts of the outlet to contact it.
inplaySoft’s CEO, Alex Rose, stated that Apple and Google’s current app store bans are a significant mistake. He argued that these blanket restrictions overlook the importance of dedicated mobile apps. According to Rose, such apps are essential for providing a better and, most importantly, safer player experience.
In turn, consultant to the Federal Council of the OAB and partner at Betlaw, Leonardo Henrique Roscoe Bessa, also criticized the decision.
He stated that the most sensible approach is the joint development of technical criteria. These would allow the presence of regulated apps, with effective age verification tools, usage limits, and measures to combat addiction. Banning does not solve the problem — regulating responsibly does.
LuckBet’s CTO, Feliphe Almeida, highlighted that official and licensed apps would ensure a safe environment for bettors, while offering companies new opportunities for interaction. Furthermore, the emphasizes that it is a service that strengthens the sector and protects the consumer.
