Google will block ads from sports betting and online gambling operators in Brazil. This action applies to those operators that do not have authorization from the Ministry of Finance. This action complies with new regulatory measures aimed at curbing illegal gambling and promoting responsible gaming.
Since September 30, sports betting operators known locally as “Bets” should secure government approval to continue advertising on Google platforms. This move aligns with the efforts of Brazil to fight gambling addiction as well as eliminate unregulated betting platforms.
Only companies that have already requested authorization to operate from the government will be able to continue their activities. This applies during the period between October and December.
Betting platforms will now also require a Google certification. You can obtain this upon request. Horse racing as well as lottery operators should also renew their certifications under these new guidelines.
Moreover, Brazil will no longer allow gambling aggregators to advertise after September 30.
The changes follow comments by Roberto Campos Neto, President of Central Bank. He noted the institution is closely monitoring risks related to the rise of online betting, specifically defaults. Neto has expressed concern over the use of digital wallets and PIX. PIX is a well-known real-time payment system in Brazil for facilitating gambling payments.
The federal government is exploring measures to stop Bolsa Família social program funds from being used for online betting on a separate front. Options under review include blocking the social program card for betting payments as well as transferring benefit ownership to stop misuse.
