Curaçao is working closely with the Dutch government to implement the newly approved gambling legislation on the island. This was stated by finance minister Javier Silvania.
Silvania outlined the next steps for implementing the LOK (National Ordinance for Games of Chance), which passed in December. This followed a constructive meeting with Dutch Minister for Justice and Safety David van Wheel and Secretary of State for Kingdom Relations and Digitalization Zsolt Szabó.
The LOK bill marks a significant step in Curaçao’s efforts to overhaul its gambling sector amid an ongoing licensing scandal. Thirteen legislators approved it, while six opposed.
The reforms first introduced in parliament in December 2022. They are a direct response to demands from the Dutch government, which tied Covid relief to numerous legal reforms. These include the requirement to clean up the gambling industry of Curaçao.
The recent meeting follows a motion in the Dutch parliament calling for closer cooperation between the Dutch government and Curaçao to tighten rules and enhance supervision of the gambling sector.
Fighting money laundering, preventing subversion, as well as safeguarding public administration integrity are the primary focus.
Silvania reiterated the commitment of Curaçao to a well-regulated, safe, and transparent gambling sector. It emphasizes that the island is open to further partnership with Dutch institutions.
Both parties agreed that close cooperation between the new gambling regulator of Curaçao, the CGA or Curaçao Gaming Authority, and the KSA or Netherlands Gambling Authority is crucial.
This collaboration will focus on sharing expertise and best practices to ensure compliance with international standards.
Both governments have agreed to hold semi-annual consultations to monitor the progress of the implementation of the LOK.
Moreover, the government will organize information meetings with key stakeholders. This includes the Public Ministry and the Financial Intelligence Unit Curaçao. This is as it strengthens supervision and implementation of the LOK.
