The Dominican Republic has signed a new resolution into law. This will provide a new regulatory regime for online gambling.
The Dominican Republic’s gambling laws fall under the jurisdiction of the Dirección de Casinos y Juegos de Azar.
Ministerio de Hacienda or Ministry of Finance manages the directorate. As a result, it is responsible for issuing licenses to online casinos and lotteries.
The Dominican Republic issued Resolution 136-2024 on March 26. We will now see a new regulatory regime for online casino and sports betting.
Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Finance issued the resolution. Dirección de Casinos y Juegos de Azar or Directorate of Casinos and Gaming will supervise the new set of measures.
The announcement follows the final initiation of the regulatory process on February 28th. This was in the form of official letter of recommendation, DM-051-2024.
Dominican Republic’s Casino Commission to the Minister of Finance issued the letter. It recommended the launch of a new regulated sector of internet gambling and betting in the Dominican Republic.
With the first license issued in 2011, online gambling was first regulated in the Dominican Republic.
Amaya was particularly the first to receive a license.Rebranded in 2017, the company is better known as The Stars Group. Flutter Entertainment acquired Amaya in 2019.
In spite two laws, Ley 139-11 and Ley 494-06, forming the framework for online gambling in the Dominican Republic, up to date, Amaya has been the only owner of a license. This meant that the law existed more in theory than in practice. It is also vague if Amaya still has its license.
The Dominican Republic is now expected to bring about a more comprehensive framework for regulation, thanks to Resolution 136-2024.
One can assume that this will make the regulated market more competitive and boost state revenue with new entrants.
