The quest of France continues for a third European Championship at Euro 2024. This is with Les Bleus now being in the quarter-finals.
Didier Deschamps will be hoping his French side can pick themselves up and go all the way in Germany. This is after a disappointing Euro 2020 campaign that saw Les Bleus crash out on penalties to Switzerland in the last 16. Aside from this, the World Cup heartbreak at the hands of the Argentina in the final in Qatar last 2022.
As normal, they were among the pre-tournament favorites to win Euro 2024. However, it hasn’t been too comfortable. With a nervy 1-0 win over Austria, France opened Euro 2024. It followed a 0-0 draw against Netherlands without Kylian Mbappe. Nonetheless, he returned to score his first-ever European Championship goal against Poland from a penalty. Nevertheless, it ended in a 1-1 stalemate after Robert Lewandowski with a spot-kick of his own.
We still await an open-play goal from a French player at this tournament, even after the round of 16. This is with Les Bleus only beating Belgium 109 through Jan Vertonghen own goal.
Anyone would think there is plenty more to come and wouldn’t go against them equalling the record of Spain and Germany as the most successful countries in the history of the competition with three European Championship trophies to their name.
