Critics have targeted the University of Sydney. They are concerned about its investment ties to major gaming companies like Aristocrat Leisure Limited and Entain Group. These companies have funded the university’s academics, research, and gambling treatment programs.
Documents obtained by Fol or freedom of information laws indicate the university held shares in Aristocrat. It is the global leader in poker machine production. Entain operates renowned betting platforms such as Ladbrokes and Neds. The institution also has additional shares in IGT or International Game Technology and Crown Resorts.
The student representative council of University got a list of the investments of the institution. This includes foreign currencies and international shares, as well as strongly opposed its gambling ties. Angus Fisher, the president of the council, explained that the concerns arise from the broader societal impacts of gambling. They also involve the funding of industry-related academic research.
Fisher stated that the issue is especially pressing because gambling-related harm disproportionately affects vulnerable communities. He noted that the industry’s role in funding research can create perceived or actual conflicts of interest. He also expressed concern that a university committed to advancing knowledge and social equity might profit from an industry that thrives on exploitation and addiction.
A university spokesman declared it was a not-for-profit entity and reinvests all available revenue into research and teaching capabilities. They also highlighted the institution’s commitment to responsible investment practices. They stated that the university has strict rules regarding investments and has recently reviewed its strategies to improve environmentally, socially, and financially responsible practices.
The spokesman also assures research integrity saying it is in all universities’ interests to ensure their research is robust and ethical–their research integrity is essential to their success. They have policies in place to ensure the avoidance and appropriate management of actual, apparent or perceived conflicts of interest by university staff and affiliates.
