Gamstop is the United Kingdom’s national self-exclusion scheme for online gambling. It has said that since its launch in April 2018, more than 500,000 people have registered with the service.
As of today, the platform has excluded 440,000 individuals. Some registrants have resumed gambling after a period of exclusion. Players can exclude themselves from all gambling sites licensed by the Gambling Commission for between six months and five years.
Shortly after a record-breaking month for Gamstop, the milestone figure comes with 8,686 new registrants signing up in April. Since the inception of Gamstop, this is the highest volume of monthly registrations.
For the scheme, a record 2023 saw over 92,000 players sign up to register.
Fiona Palmer, the CEO of Gamstop said that they have come a very long way since their launch in April 2028. She added that people now widely recognize Gamstop as an important tool for helping vulnerable consumers take a break from gambling.
Palmer added that they are proud to have been able to help hundreds of thousands of people to take back control of their lives through self-execution. They hope to help many more in the years to come.
Online gambling activity in the United Kingdom increased significantly in the last six months. This follows a similar trajectory as sign-ups of Gamstop. For online gross gambling yield or GGY, Q1 and Q2 were both record months. This is according to UK Gambling Commission data.
Active players for real event betting amounted to 19.4 million between May and July. This is up to 10.9% from last year. Meanwhile, slots players also increased 10.8% to 13.3 million for the period.
Recently, Gamstop flagged a concerning trend of increasing registrations among younger players. The data shows that one in two people who registered were aged 16-35. Additionally, we observed a 12% year-on-year increase in the number of 16-24 year-olds choosing to exclude.
