The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Mr. Kurt Edwin Simeon Okraku, has declared war on illegal betting. His focus is specifically on betting related to the Ghana Premier League. It is the elite football competition of the country.
The GFA President states that the Ghana Football Association has not licensed any betting company to offer odds on football competitions in Ghana, including Ghana Premier League. They would also seek legal remedies if betting companies take odds illegally.
Mr. Okraku adressed delegates at the 30th Ordinary Congress of the Ghana Football Association. He stated that betting companies all over the world have become key partners in the development of football.
Nonetheless, he was furious about betting companies illegally taking odds from Ghana football without permission. He would like to take serious steps to address the issue.
Okraku said that the Ghana Football Association has not licensed any betting company in Ghana to offer odds on their games. He added that they will empower their legal department to confront this issue head-on.
He also added that it is time for them to act and ensure that they respect each other’s space. It is not okay for betting companies to continuously feed on their football without consultations.
Okraku further noted that the GFA is open to meeting with betting companies. They want to ensure that they handle odds on Ghanaian football competitions correctly.
According to him, saying “no” now means they are open to doing business with betting companies legally. They want to invite serious betting companies to meet with them and discuss potential partnerships.
