Authorities prosecuted Shin, 55-year-old mother of Han So-Hee, for operating seven gambling dens for profit between January 2022 and August 2023. She received a one-year prison sentence, along with two years of probation and 120 hours of community service. The agency of Han had earlier issued a statement about the case of Shin.
Han So-Hee’s mother has received a suspended jail term. She was also sentenced to 120 hours of community service for operating numerous illegal gambling establishments. This includes a year in prison, as well as two years in suspension. Authorities prosecuted Shin, aged 55, for operating seven gambling venues for profit between late January 2022 and late August 2023.
On December 25, The Korea Times reported that judge Kim Do-Hyung of the Wonju Branch of Chuncheon District Court sentenced the mother of the actor.
The court observed that, despite receiving a fine in 2023, the defendant continued to manage and operate illegal gambling sites. She collaborated with several game room operators to establish these gambling venues. Although the records do not clearly detail the exact profits she earned, the structure of the operations and profit-sharing arrangements suggests that the amount is likely substantial.
Allegedly, Shin used a popular application Telegram to coordinate with people connected with a dark web gaming site. Authorities penalized her with 5 million KRAW (or $3,800) in 2023 after finding her guilty of breaking the Game Industry Promotion Act in 2021. Nonetheless, she continued her business leading to more recent charges.
The agency of Han So-Hee had recently issued a statement distancing her from the matter. It says, “This case is entirely unrelated to the actress and stems from her mother’s personal actions. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this private matter.”
It also stated, “Ms Shin used a bank account under Han So-Hee’s name in the process of borrowing money. Ms. Shin arbitrarily opened the bank account when Han So Hee was a minor, and she used that account to borrow money without Han So-Hee’s knowledge.”
