The High Court of Bangladesh has directed the government to submit a progress report. The report must detail the actions taken against online gambling advertisements and related financial transactions. Issued on May 4, the order gives the government 30 days to respond. The bench was led by Justice Naima Haider and Justice Aynun Nahar Siddiqua. They issued the directive following a writ petition. Barrister Muhammad Humayun Kabir filed the petition on behalf of the human rights organization Law and Life Foundation Trust.

In addition to requesting the progress report, the court ordered the government to explain why authorities should not block access to gambling websites, apps, and advertisements on social media and digital platforms such as Google, Yahoo, and YouTube. The court also asked the government why it has not established a dedicated monitoring team. This team would oversee, regulate, and take action against online gambling activities across the country. The respondents named in the case include the secretaries of the ministries of Post and Telecommunications, Information and Broadcasting, Home Affairs, and Law. Other respondents include the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), the Financial Intelligence Unit of Bangladesh Bank, and the Inspector General of Police.
The petition argues that, despite existing legal restrictions, online gambling has rapidly expanded across Bangladesh. This growth poses significant risks to public welfare. The petition estimates that approximately five million people, including minors, participate in online gambling activities. Additionally, the petition claims that some Bangladeshi celebrities are promoting gambling platforms. They do this by sharing paid advertisements on their personal social media accounts. This further encourages participation in online gambling.
The petition calls for immediate action to curb the spread of online gambling. It aims to protect vulnerable groups, especially the youth, from its harmful impacts. The High Court’s order marks an important legal step. It addresses the growing concerns surrounding online gambling, its promotion, and its potential consequences for individuals and society.
