The government of Indonesia has suspended TikTok’s operating license. The move comes after the platform failed to provide complete data on online gambling-linked livestreams. This issue arose during recent protests.

The Indonesian media outlet Indonesia Inside quoted Alexander Sabar, spokesman for the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi). He claimed that TikTok officials provided only partial data on the TikTok Live broadcasters.
Between August 23 and August 30, the livestreams in question aired. Meutya Hafid, Komdigi minister at the time, claimed that gambling-funded streamers were promoting anarchy and violence.
She said that the accounts in question received donations from the accounts of online casino operators.
According to Alexander, Jakarta gave TikTok an ultimatum. The deadline was September 23. TikTok was required to hand over data on the traffic and monetization of streamers.
He explained that TikTok stated this in an official letter. The platform said it cannot comply with the request. TikTok cited its internal policies and procedures as the reason.
Komdigi is particularly keen to learn the precise monetary value of the gifts it thinks the streamers received.
Briefly, TikTok paused its Live functions in Indonesia during the protests. Nonetheless, Komdigi thinks the online gaming platforms may have gained exposure through making the donations.
The representative added that TikTok respects the laws of the countries where it operates.
According to Alexander, Komdigi considers TikTok to have violated its obligations. He said that is why they have temporarily frozen the operating permit. This action is a follow-up to the oversight.
The officials added that the sanctions were not merely administrative measures. He said that, instead, they serve as a form of state protection. Their purpose is to ensure the safety of Indonesian citizens from the risks of digital technology.
Komdigi warned other social media platforms and companies in the digital space to comply with applicable national laws.
It has been said by the ministry that it was committed to continuously strengthening oversight. The ministry said it would ensure that all digital platforms operate responsibly in Indonesia.
