The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will question a high-profile Malaysian businessman with the title Tan Sri. He is accused of misusing sukuk funds allocated for a Klang Valley highway project. According to The Star, investigators believe he diverted a large portion of the project’s financing. The money allegedly went toward luxury purchases and gambling activities, both in Malaysia and overseas.
The suspect, recently discharged from a private hospital, has now regained medical stability. MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that preparations for a formal interview are ongoing. The Tan Sri has not given an official statement yet. However, medical clearance has allowed investigators to move forward with the next phase of the probe.
Authorities estimate the Tan Sri spent nearly RM20 million on gambling alone. The ongoing investigation has uncovered the acquisition of several high-value assets. These include real estate, luxury watches, jewelry, vehicles, and even horses. Investigators believe these were purchased using misappropriated sukuk funds. The case also involves links to overseas assets held by the suspect.
Authorities have interviewed 45 witnesses to date, recalling some for further clarification. Azam emphasized that the Tan Sri remains a central figure in the expanding investigation. He said substantial evidence and witness testimonies support the allegations.
In June last year, the MACC announced the seizure of assets worth an estimated RM143 million. This included RM37.5 million in bank funds, RM3 million in premium alcohol, and over RM15 million in foreign holdings. Investigators have since served asset declaration notices to the Tan Sri and several associated individuals.
The investigation highlights serious concerns over the misuse of infrastructure funds and reflects the scale of alleged corruption under review.
