The UKGC or UK Gambling Commission has once again asked customers to be aware of illegal websites. This happens because some platforms offer easily accessible deposits.
The Observer’s investigation revealed that 10 unlicensed online gambling providers operated in the UK. These sites had integrated Mastercard and Visa payments into their websites.
The investigation found that many UK players had already suffered losses. They lost thousands of pounds after being unable to withdraw their winnings from unregulated sites.
The black market lacks the safeguards required for regulated operators in the UK. These include protections against scams and financial fraud. As a result, these losses are not surprising.
A UKGC spokesperson acknowledged the illegal websites highlighted by the Observer. They stated that the commission is aware of these sites and continues to take action to disrupt the unlicensed market. This includes working with online platforms and payment providers such as Mastercard and Visa.
They added that anyone gambling on unlicensed sites is supporting illegal activity and putting themselves at risk. The financial data could be stolen, harvested or misused and they may not even be paid out if they win.
They also stated that these sites support crime and lack the required standards and safeguards. Unlike licensed operators, they do not offer self-exclusion or address gambling-related harm. Consumers can easily verify a site’s license by searching the business register on the official website.
In general, payment options are one of the most important factors for players when choosing an online gambling platform. This has been an integral part of operators’ customer acquisition strategies for quite some time now.
There’s something for everyone, whether it’s PayPal, digital wallets, or debit cards.
