Authorities in New Zealand are staging a crackdown on offshore online casinos. This includes the threat of hefty fines for those who promote them on social media.

The Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) stated that it has issued takedown notices to influencers. This is the first time the DIA has taken such action against influencers promoting overseas gambling operators.
RNZ or Radio New Zealand says that influencers have been collaborating with overseas online-based casinos and staging promotional giveaways. This directly violates the Gambling Act of New Zealand.
Vicki Scott, Director of Gambling Regulatory Services, told RNZ that they have been investigating this issue. She added that they will take action against influencers who are publicly and clearly breaking the law.
Penalties may include fines up to $10,000 per violation. Authorities have issued four warning letters and are investigating 13 others.
RNZ acquired a copy of one of the letters, which states, “In this case, I have decided not to prosecute or issue an infringement notice for this offense. However, this letter is a formal warning that I consider that you have committed an offence under section 16 of the Act. Any future breaches of section 16 may lead to an infringement notice or prosecution.
“The Department recommends that you immediately cease posting any reference to overseas online gambling or gambling operators to your social media. This includes any posts made in your likeness by others acting on your behalf (such as social media agencies).”
The government will auction off up to 15 licenses. This comes as the country prepares to introduce a regulatory framework for online casino services in early 2026. Though full details have yet to be shared, this would not include sports betting.
The proliferation of gambling has raised concerns across New Zealand about its impact on the mental health and well-being of residents. Maori Public Health is calling for a complete ban, including on influencer marketing. This comes as major global companies tighten restrictions on gambling-related content.
