A high-level approach to online casino have been agreed by the government. It says this is designed to minimize harm and support tax collection. It also aims to provide consumer protections for New Zealand players.

Brooke van Velden, the minister of internal affairs said that this means it will be illegal for unlicensed operators to target players in the country.
Van Velden shared some details of the regulatory framework while the government continues to develop its plans. Her department will be responsible for regulating New Zealand online casino operators.
Through an auction, a limited number of licenses will be available. This is subject to the bidders meeting regulatory requirements. Players must be at least 18 years old or older.
Casino must be fenced off from other gambling products while strictly limited advertising for licensees will be allowed. The New Zealand government said that sports betting and lottery should not be offered alongside icasino.
Van Velden said this is not meant to increase gambling among New Zealanders. Instead, it’s to ensure operators meet requirements for consumer protection, harm minimization, and tax payment.
For the public, there will be an opportunity to give feedback on the regulatory plans during the select committee process.
The new regulatory framework for online casino in New Zealand is being intended to launch by 2026.
SkyCity Entertainment Group, a casino operator already voiced its support.
SkyCity said that they remain supportive of the regulation of online casino gaming in New Zealand, with an emphasis on strong host responsibility and delivering community benefits in New Zealand.
Its CEO, Jason Walbridge welcomed the plans to restrict license numbers and advertising in a LinkedIn post shortly after the news broke.
He said that SkyCity has long supported regulating online play to minimize harm and protect Kiwis. Limiting advertising and the number of operators in New Zealand is a good way of doing this.
